Natural teeth whitening method – Activate Charcoal

Organika Activated Charcoal

Who doesn’t want pearly whites when they smile? With the rise of my caffeine consumption, I’ve noticed that my teeth are getting stained from my beloved morning coffee ritual so to try to restore it to its natural shade, I have done the following in the past 3 years:

  • gone to 2 professional teeth whitening sessions
  • used Crest 3D whitening strips
  • used whitening toothpaste from various brands

The end result? I had to switch from my normal toothpaste brand (Crest/Colgate) to Sensodyne. My teeth got so sensitive that it would hurt to eat ice cream (even to drink iced water!) and the same goes for hot foods and liquids. To prevent exposing my teeth to more chemicals, I searched the web high and low for a more natural alternative. Lo’ and behold, I stumbled upon many DIY’s on Pinterest and one of them being activated charcoal. That immediately caught my attention because I own several face masks containing charcoal (usually used to clear out your pores) and I wondered if charcoal could even be exposed to gums, is it safe? And here are the answers I’ve found for those who are skeptical as well but are interested in this DIY method.

What is activated charcoal?

“Activated charcoal” is similar to common charcoal, but is made especially for use as medicine. To make activated charcoal, manufacturers heat common charcoal in the presence of a gas that causes the charcoal to develop lots of internal spaces or “pores.” These pores help activated charcoal “trap” chemicals and increase their absorptive properties.

What is activated charcoal used for?

Activated charcoal is used to treat poisonings, mild infections, reduce intestinal gas, for hair and skin, and to whiten teeth!

How does it work?

Medically, activated charcoal is good at trapping chemicals and prevents their absorption. To whiten teeth, the powder removes plaque from the surface of your teeth whitening it in the process.

Do I need a special brush?

No, your regular toothbrush is just fine. Keep in mind however that it WILL stain your bristles so it’s best if you have a separate toothbrush for this purpose.

What are the instructions?

To be honest, there are a whole load of different instructions out there. Some ask for you to mix equal parts of water and activated charcoal (about a teaspoon) and swish it in your mouth for a minute and hold it in for 5 more. While others ask for you to mix the water and activated charcoal together and use your toothbrush to brush it on. For this specific product, it came with its own set of instructions (check them out below!).

I apologize that my ‘after’ image is not as clear as the ‘before’ image however I can tell you that it did whiten slightly (it wasn’t that much of a difference). I believe that this method is indeed a work in progress (much like any other methods) and would require for you to incorporate this into your weekly/monthly routine. I would recommend giving it a try since there’s no major harm to your gums and teeth unlike the products loaded with chemicals, and it even improves your oral hygiene!  – keep at it for at least 3 weeks to see results.

[Pros]

  • It’s natural and affordable
  • Multi-purpose use (can be used as a face mask as well! and for medical purposes)
  • You get so much product for the price you pay

[Cons]

  • It gets messy – splatters EVERYWHERE
  • May take a couple of rinses to fully get all the product out of the cracks in between your teeth
  • Takes awhile to see results (at least 3 weeks – once/week)
